Inclusive product testing of an app for people with hearing impairments
Product tests of an inclusive transport app for people with hearing impairments in Switzerland show that it addresses relevant needs, but that improvements are necessary to increase its value in daily use.
Client: Swiss Federal Railways (SBB)
Need: To evaluate the accessibility and everyday usefulness of the SBB Inclusive App for people with hearing impairments, and to identify concrete areas for improvement in order to increase adoption and impact.
Approach: We surveyed and interviewed eight people with varying degrees of hearing loss across different Swiss cantons. The research focused on everyday use, accessibility barriers, and desired improvements, especially around real-time information and app usability. Insights were collected through guided interviews and experience-based feedback.
Outcome: The testing confirmed that while the app addresses relevant needs, improvements are necessary to increase its value in daily use. Key recommendations included integrating core SBB features (e.g., ticketing and EasyRide), ensuring reliable real-time text announcements for all trains, and expanding train type recognition to include regional lines. The project also highlighted the need for better awareness and clearer communication about the app’s purpose and functionality.
